Well, of course, I have have to start off with my SLAVE to the SQUAREwave feature first! Here's a couple tracks that David played this week that I haven't already posted! First up is the great Hopeless Believers, followed by Big Change - both tracks are on their Big Change CD. The version of Big Change I'm posting is an extended version that was available on a promo.

And yet another great track by the Comsat Angels - Day One

Here's one more for tonight's post - Graham Parker's - I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down

And one last item for tonight. David played the great track The Formula by Thinkman, which was essentially Rupert Hine. To find that album, along with additional Thinkman and Rupert Hine releases (you need to go back a month or two to find them all) - I strongly suggest you go visit R0bert P0land's Blog.

Well, it's about time I got around to featuring SLAVE to the SQUAREwave! Watch this blog for the next few weeks for much more on this great band that was voted 'Best New Band of 2005' by David! If you listen to David's show, you should be well aware that the Slaves are playing a show at the Diesel Playhouse in Toronto on Sunday, June 15, 2008. It should be a great show as the band is just back from a mini-tour with dates in Montreal and Ottawa. I've seen them a few times myself and plan to be at this one as they always put on a great show. Also, for more info on the band you should head over to their website and myspace pages.

Over the past week or so, I've struck up an e-mail conversation with Rob from the band, initially to get the OK to do a post on them and then for more and more information - many thanks go to Rob for giving me the OK to go ahead with my posts and patiently responding to my many questions and requests!

To get everyone in the mood for the upcoming show, here's a few tracks to sample that David spins fairly regularly. First up are a couple great tracks 'Heavy Bones' and 'Summertown' that first appeared on their self titled CD that was released in 2000.

Here's a few tracks featured on Thursday night's show:

First up is Tom Robinson's Atmospherics: Listen To The Radio that appeared on his album Hope & Glory. That entire album and some additional material is available for free on Tom's website. The Pukka Orchestra did a great cover of this back in the 80's as well.

Here's what Tom had to say on his free download page - interesting to know the split of the proceeds from downloads (based on UK iTunes pricing)!

Free Downloads: iTunes downloads cost 79p per track. Writer/publisher get 6p, Performer 6-8p, Visa/Mastercard 7p, Apple 12p, and Record Company almost 50p. Sod that. Help yourself to my songs & share them with your friends: right-click (Mac: ctrl-click) on titles to download. Optional: if you'd like to help with hosting costs, click below

Here's a few more tracks that were played in Friday night's show:

I'll start off with Blank Generation by Richard Hell & The Voidoids:

Richard Hell & the Voidoids - Blank Generation / Love Comes in Spurts

Richard Hell & the Voidoids - Blank Generation

The next track I'll feature is by Julian Cope - Sunspots. I have to say Julian is a favourite artist of mine - I hadn't really heard much, if any, of Julian or The Teardrop Explodes before a friend with an extra ticket to his 1995 show at Lee's Palace in Toronto and asked me to go. Luckily, I agreed to go even though I didn't really know who he was at the time. Long story short - it was an amazing show and turned me into a big Cope fan. If you are looking for any Cope or Cope-related releases - do yourself a huge favour and go have a look at the following blog. I discovered that amazing blog a month or so ago and I'm still working through all the Cope releases available there, plus a host of other amzaing music is posted as well!

Julian Cope - Sunspots

Finally, I'm posting a great track by Fiction Factory, a band that I think just about everybody thinks was a only a one-hit wonder for their 80's hit '(Feels Like) Heaven' However, that's not what David played or the track I'm going to post - instead he played another great track fron their 'Throw The Warped Wheel Out' album (which is availalbe for download at this blog) but instead I'm posting the 12" version of Ghost of Love which was the single release after (Feels Like) Heaven.

Fiction Factory - Ghost of Love / Other Side of Grey

Fiction Factory - Ghost of Love

Fiction Factory - Throw the Warped Wheel Out

Fiction Factory - Throw The Warped Wheel Out Link

If you can't tell by now, I don't quite agree with the common perception that Fiction Factory was a one-hit wonder. Back in the 80's I had both 'Throw The Warped Wheel Out' and their follow-up album which was called 'Another Story' on vinyl, both of which got fairly regular play on my turntable and in my opinion were both pretty solid albums. Another Story has never been released on CD and seems to be pretty hard to come by in web searches I've done, so as a bonus, here's a vinyl rip of that full album for download!

Leave me a comment if you're interested in some more on that story (or do your own web search!)

You can also find another CD there that Leon Stevenson was involved with and David has played some tracks from.

I found Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs album posted at this blog. The Blues Town blog is well worth some additional searching as there is a bunch of great blues that gets posted there. Actually, I also found an Elliot Murphy album that contains the great track 'Everything I Do (Leads Me Back To You)' track which also features vocals by Bruce Springsteen. David spins that track semi-regularly as well - I've been looking for that track for quite a while and it was just posted there yesterday!

A bunch of tracks to feature tonight, what a great show!

I'll start off with a great one by Long John Baldry called Flying. I was actually disappointed not to find this one on iTunes - I really thought it would be there as I was able to pick up a copy of the great album that this track is from (It Ain't Easy) back when it was re-released on CD back in 2005 - shortly after Long John's unfortunate death. I still remember David's show where he did a great tribute to Long John at that time. What can I say about Long John and this great album? I guess I'll just re-tell a story that I'm pretty sure I've heard David tell. Long John was at least part of the reason that the U-Know Awards (which eventually became the Casby's) were created - when Long John was nominated in the 80's as best 'New Artist' by the Juno Awards, that showed just how far out of touch with music those awards were and David decided that there should be an alternative. The nomination in that category completely ignored the incredible legacy that Long John had already established in his long career to that point!

If you enjoy the track I've posted, please go to Long John's website and order a copy of the CD - you won't be disapponted. My favourite selection on that album is actually a combination of the first two tracks - a spoken word opener: 'Conditional Discharge' and the amazing 'Don't Try To Lay No Boogie Woogie On The King Of Rock'N'Roll'. Fortunately, both those tracks are available on iTunes (the Canadian store anyways) on a release titled 'Rhino Hi-Five - Long John Baldry EP'. That selection is VERY high up on my all-time favourite tracks!

Long John Baldry - It Ain't Easy

Long John Baldry - Flying

Next up is a great track by Thunderclap Newman - Accidents. If you've never heard of Thunderclap Newman - you still might still have heard their great track 'Something In The Air' - that was a reasonably big hit in when it was released in 1969 and was featured in the movie 'Almost Famous' in 2000.

Thunderclap Newman - Accidents / I See it All

Thunderclap Newman - Accidents

Another great song - Grand Hotel by Procol Harum.

Procol Harum - Grand Hotel / A Rum Tale

Procol Harum - Grand Hotel

This is another great track - 1849 by Lighthouse. There's a recent band also called Lighthouse that I know nothing about. This track is from a Canadian band from the early 70's that featured Skip Prokop who was once a CFNY DJ! Skip has a website that sells CD's but unfortunately not any Lighthouse CD's that I could find.

Lighthouse - One Fine Morning

Lighthouse - 1849

David just kept them coming, here's Leon Russell's It's A Hard Rain Gonna Fall - a great Dylan cover.

Next up is Be Bop Deluxe with the track 'Japan'. I originally thought that this was on their 1978 album 'Drastic Plastic', but it may have been just released as a single in 1977. That's what's great about David's show - he preserves obsure tracks like this that everyone else has forgotten about (or never noticed in the first place!)

And a band I've featured a couple times before, here's Closer Together by The Box

Featured Artists

Here's a couple from the Friday show this week.

First is a great cover of the Electric Prunes' signature hit I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night) by an 80's band called the Thought. I was fortunate enough to get this from a post on a great 80's website and posting board - my thanks and compliments to the original poster!

Next is another great Boys Brigade track - Into The Flow

There were some other tracks from tonight that I thought I would be able to post, for instance, "Like Dust, I Was Blown Away Like Dust" that The Passion Puppets' album Beyond The Pale is available on iTunes.

Similarly, I was telling "The Story of The Blues" because I was hoping to post that great track by The Mighty Wah!, but that and a bunch of their other songs are also available on iTunes, even the 9 minute extended 12" version!

The Search...

Does anybody have any good stories about a great quest for a song that you just HAD to have? I've had a few that took many years to track down. Now we think a search that takes a couple months was a tough one! Anyone remember a time before you could google lyrics and ID a previously unknown track halfway through the song and locate a copy to download with TotallyFuzzy by the time the song is over? (OK, it's usually not quite that easy in most cases). :-)

One that still sticks out for me was my quest for the track Catwalker by the Diodes. I first heard that song on CFNY back in the mid 80's. I was convinced that it was by the Stranglers for some reason, so I picked up their album Feline album first. Over the years of my search I became a big fan of the Stranglers due to various albums I bought hoping that I might find the track that was eluding me (at least that wasn't a bad thing). At some point I caught at least part of the song on a cassette. Eventually in the mid to late 90's I was able to get that track ID's on the spiritofradio.ca site - so that search only took 10 years or so!

I don't know about others, but I can remember buying vinyl, never having heard of a band based on recommendations of a music store clerk. Or how about buying two or three versions of a track before getting the 'right' version!

Here's an instant post from tonight's show - now playing is City Boy's 5,000 Years which is on their debut self titled album. That can be found for download at the following link:

David plays a bunch of great tracks from this band (Young Men Gone West, The Greatest Story Ever Told and a number of others). They seem to have been lost in the late 70's punk explosion as they didn't fit in very well with with the direction music was heading in at the time. This is one of the many bands that David plays regularly that I've thought - how did I miss them?

Ok, here's another one from tonight. David just played Johnny Clegg & Juluka (or Johnny Clegg & Savuka depending on the release it seems) - Scaterlings of Africa - this one is available on iTunes, but it's also available as a free full track mp3 download at last.fm - cool!

Johnny Clegg & Savuka - Scatterlings of Africa

And he just keeps them coming -

David played some Garfield (not the cat) - that's a rather annoying fact you have to live with in any web search for this obscure Canadian artist. Here's a link to a YouTube video someone made of the great track 'Private Affair'. I hope to have more to post about Garfield in the future

And I have to edit this post one more time. Now David played the track I Still Remember by Blackmore's Night. Again, this is another band that he regularly plays a number of great tracks from. I recently found a few of their albums available for download at the following blog:
